Introduction

Any young adult that enters the job market has approximately 37 years to achieve financial independence before the rat race ends. This is assuming that you begin working at the age of 23 and eventually retire at the age of 60. The span of less than 4 decades provides you with 13,505 days to squirrel away enough savings so that you can achieve the ultimate goal of financial independence.

Imagine having sufficient financial resources to cover your living expenses, so you no longer have to worry about working for a living. That's the alluring promise of financial independence.

The journey towards achieving financial independence, like any other journey, begins with the all-important first step. As the Chinese proverb wisely says, "The journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step." In this article, we'll explore how anyone, regardless of their financial background, can take those crucial first steps towards financial independence.

What is financial independence?

Financial independence means having the financial resources to generate sufficient passive income that allow you to live a life of your own choice and design without having to work another day in your life. Once you achieve financial independence, you have the option to either continue working, which is a logical choice if work is your passion, or to leave the corporate world and pursue your personal passions, such as bonsai cultivation, practicing zen meditation at the top of a mountain, or traveling the world, which is an increasingly popular option.

Embracing small beginnings.

In the current inflationary world that we live in, it is easy to feel overwhelmed when thinking about financial independence. However, to quote another wise Chinese proverb, "Even when dust piles up, it becomes a mountain,"  it is crucial that you embrace small beginnings and realize that little, consistent actions will lead to eventual progress in your journey.

Begin the journey on solid footing.

You need to embark on the journey towards financial independence on a solid footing. Begin by mastering the basics of personal finance: frugality, saving, budgeting, and living within your means. Be wise with your expenses and ensure that monthly expenditures do not exceed your income so that you have money left over to build your wealth. Remember that "A penny saved is a penny earned," and every cent of savings that you can muster will bring you closer to your goal of financial independence.

The importance of budgeting cannot be overemphasized, as it is critical to control your expenses and live within your means. As so aptly put by Charles Dickens more than a century ago, "Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen six, result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pound ought and six, result misery."

Once you have your expenses under control, it is crucial to pay down your debt, whether its your mortgage, car hire-purchase loan, etc. True financial independence cannot be achieved while you are under the servitude of debt. As the Chinese proverb reminds us, "Happy is the man without sickness. Rich is the man with no debts."

By all means, do not incur credit card or personal finance debts to fund your lifestyle. Just as compounding growth can accelerate your journey towards financial independence, the high compound interest on consumer debt will quickly pave the way towards financial ruin. Having high-interest debt will prove to be a large impediment to your journey towards financial independence. As usual, there is another wise Chinese proverb to remind us of the dire consequences of debt, "A small hole not mended in time will become a big hole, which is much more difficult to mend."

Make your money work for you.

The key to financial independence is investing to generate long term wealth. By investing prudently, you can put your hard-earned savings to work for you, allowing the power of compounding to work its magic over time. Equity investing is my personal investment vehicle of choice. To be specific, I have relied on a portfolio of dividend paying stocks that provide me with a consistent stream of passive income that covers my household living expenses while keeping up with inflation in the long run. This method has worked best for me and allowed me to achieve financial independence.

When is the right time to start investing? This Chinese proverb has provided the answer for many generations of youth: "The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second-best time is now."

Overcoming Obstacles

Fear and uncertainty can be stubborn obstacles hindering your journey towards financial independence. However, it is important to remember that our fears often stem from ignorance, and the sure way to overcome ignorance is by keeping an open mind and constantly educating yourself, especially on the concepts of personal finance and investing. In the internet age, there is no shortage of online resources, including this one, to help you learn. As I can personally attest, you will likely make mistakes along the journey. When that happens, do learn from your errors. As the Chinese like to say, "A fall into a ditch makes you wiser."

Conclusion

The journey towards financial independence is a marathon, not a sprint. The way to finish a marathon is to reach the finish line, and that can only be achieved through discipline, patience, and perseverance. With the right attitude and action plan, you can begin your own journey by taking the small but critical first step.
